WOLF KAHN 2024
Remembering Wolf
The world has lost perhaps the most beloved and respected American painter of the last 60 years. Wolf Kahn touched thousands of lives as a friend, teacher, patron, brilliant colorist and scrubber: Scrub, scrub, scrub. I’m not a painter, I’m a scrubber. There are few artists who could produce such an emotional and visceral response to the viewing of his works. All of this will be part of his enormous legacy. I was privileged to know Wolf for over forty years. I loved him and miss him dearly, but I take joy in his phenomenal life and how much he contributed to all of us. Take a moment to pass by an old barn along the road or look up into a stand of trees. Wolf will be right there.

I like being old, even if the names I hear are more and more unfamiliar. Maybe, to paraphrase Goethe who said that, "Youth is wasted on the young," we should add that "Age can be wasted on the aged," unless one's capacity to wonder increases.

WOLF KAHN (1927-2020)
Born in Stuttgart, Germany, and then immigrating to the United States at age 13, Wolf Kahn is considered by many to be the premier landscape painter in America. A master of both pastel and oil, Kahn is an artist who embodies the synthesis of his modern abstract training under Hans Hofmann, with the palette of Matisse, Rothko’s sweeping bands of color, and the atmospheric qualities of Impressionism. It is precisely this fusion of color, spontaneity and representation that has produced such a rich and expressive body of work with unmatched luminosity. Kahn has been honored with numerous awards, including the International Medal of Arts from the United States Department of State and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Design and School of Fine Arts. His works are in the permanent collections of nearly every major American museum including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Hirschhorn Museum.
