Celebrating 40 years!

About Jerald Melberg

• Jerald Melberg came to Charlotte, NC from Greenville, SC in 1976 to serve as Curator of Exhibitions at the Mint Museum of Art • Melberg was curator for 7 years, mounting significant exhibitions for artists such as Seymour Lipton and Larry Rivers. The most notable exhibition was a Romare Bearden retrospective in 1980 • This retrospective, titled Romare Bearden: 1970-1980, traveled to the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, MS, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond, VA • The exhibition established an enduring relationship between Bearden and Melberg, as well as Melberg’s reputation as a mover and shaker in Charlotte’s art community • By 1983, Melberg had gathered a group of investors and was ready to announce his plan to open a gallery

A different kind of gallery

• From the very

beginning, Melberg’s vision was to exhibit both nationally and locally recognized artists under one gallery name. This approach had not yet been tried in Charlotte, NC

Established 1984

• Jerald Melberg Gallery opened its inaugural exhibition on January 16, 1984 • Its original location was in uptown Charlotte on 7 th Street
